Humanimal by Jörn Kaspuhl @ Vallery (BCN)

Vallery invites you to the opening of the exhibition,
“Humanimal” by Jörn Kaspuhl,
Thursday, November 26th at 20:00h.

“Humanimal” represents the essential mix of Jörn Kaspuhls favorite visual themes. From the detailed human portraits it is leading over to the mystical and ornamental world of nature and its forms, patterns, colours and shapes.

Starting earlier with a continuously growing set of musician-portraits simple nature elements like feathers or bird wings have poured more and more into the motifs. The next step was to develop the hybrids now shown in this book.

The human animals or the animalistic humans – depending from what point of view you´d like to see them – are the first step into the world of “Humanimal”.

Inspired by many different influences like classic fairy tales as well as dark horror flicks or by mythological figures and simple childhood masquerades the concept of this series is to create a state of discomfort and surprise for the viewer. Casual photographs of people in trivial situations served as templates for the pictures.

“Humanimal” has been designed as a continuous project for the future.

Besides the “Humanimal” series other artwork regarding to the overall animal-topic is presented in this exhibition. From extensive overflowing patterns over natural and floristic book covers up to snarling posters everything covering the natural element of Jörn Kaspuhls portfolio is shown at the Vallery Gallery in Barcelona, Spain.”

In 2002 Kaspuhl moved to Hamburg and started his education in Illustration at the Department of Design located at the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg. Before his graduation in October 2008 he gained widely experience in working as a freelance illustrator for several international magazines, publishers, musicians and fashion-labels. Since starting his commission work in summer 2006 his client list is continuously growing, including such names as The New Yorker, Nylon, Monocle, GQ, The Independent, Wired, idN, Die Zeit, SZ Magazin, Der Spiegel, The Folio Society, Random House or Taschen.

In February 2009 Kaspuhl joined the list of artists represented by the international illustration agency Dutch Uncle with offices in London, New York and Tokyo. Switching between commission assignments and private projects Kaspuhl is situated in his small studio nearby the beautiful harbour sight of Hamburg.

The main focus in Kaspuhls illustrations lays in the handmade drawing. Out of bold and clear lines he expresses his ideas with ink and pen by shaping each image out like a woodcut. With regard to content many pictures have closeness to animals and nature elements itself. Interwoven organic forms and patterns catch his interest as well as the simplest shape of things.
